Divided Dualed Sequel Elsie Chapman Books

Better than the first book in numerous respects, especially in expanding on the world-building and premise. I had a love-hate relationship with the whiplash pace for conflict and plot twists because it did keep me guessing and really squeezed a lot of story into a book its size.

My issue - which may just be a personal preference - West subverts or side-steps problems almost as quickly as they're introduced, which diminished my satisfaction or ability to feel suspense for a tense situation. It also seemed like a stretch that a 15 year old who showed limited skills for confrontation in the first book and suffers from debilitating PTSD in this book world have the wiles to keep out foxing people far more determined than herself.

So the bottom line is it's better and more action-packed than the first, West is more proactive, world-building is there, writing is still gorgeous but the plot tests your suspension of disbelief at times

Divided Dualed Sequel Elsie Chapman Books Reviews

Quick & Dirty West thought she was done killing but the Board has other ideas…

Opening Sentence “If you don’t watch my every move, you’re going to die,” I say to the girl at the end of my sword.

The Review

West is done killing now that she is complete, but when the board summons her to a super secret meeting she can’t say no to, she is shocked when they ask her to make three more kills. Alts for Level 1 board members. In exchange, they will make sure that any children she has are born completes. They will never have to kill their alt. The problem is she is still haunted by the killing she has already done.

So West sets off to hunt down the Alts, but when someone gives her Rourke’s gun and lets her know that one shot in the eye wipes all the code giving the message that the other person is now complete without killing the Alt, she begins to give the Alts choices, but when her last kill sends her to a familiar face she knows there is something more going on, especially since this person isn’t an alt, he is a complete.

As West becomes the hunted and she is trying to figure out why the board wants this person dead, and why they have set her up for other murders.

Overall, this was much more satisfying than the first book, most of what happened in this book I assumed would have happened in first book. I still feel like it kind of failed to reach its full potential. In the first book, West is a killer and she kills who she needs to in order to prove her worth. I was hoping she would be like some kind of hero and find some kind of way to change the system. However, that really wasn’t addressed in the first book and ultimately it wasn’t really addressed in this book.

It almost wrapped up everything, but at the last minute it kind of ended in such a way that you would almost think a third book is coming. So that was disappointing for me. I really wanted it pull everything together and have some kind of solution. I mean it addressed the mysteries so to speak and everything kind of ended well, it just didn’t really fix or address the society issues about alts and killing.

It glossed over that and that is where it failed to reach it’s full potential, I think. When I started this series, I thought that was where it was going and it tapped in this book and then just walked away. So it was good, but not great.

Notable Scene

My reflections are all around, and already ther’s too many others of me, Alt upon Alt. I sink into a crouch and wait. Let my breath out in a soundless streaming of air that fogs the mirror in front of me. The soft smear of condensation is the only thing that separates my reflection from the others, and I shiver.

FTC Advisory Random House for Young Readers provided me with a copy of Divided. No goody bags, sponsorships, “material connections,” or bribes were exchanged for my review.
This was a good read!
First I would like to say for those that are confused this is a dualogy. The author came out and answered a fan question. This is the last book. This review is for both novels. I found the plot development in both books to be decent, but not great. Maybe I'm just used to The Hunger Games and other New York Times bestsellers but this was very average. I loved the idea of there being alts and needing to prove your place in society by being forced to kill another version of yourself at a young age. I thought the character development was fantastic with a strong stubborn female lead and the plot had all the normal dystopian checks as any other, except for the fact that there was no real rebellion as you would see in more popular books. I wouldn't consider that a spoiler because you can tell by the way the synopsis is written out. There is no mention of the government being pissed enough to go to war like you would see in Divergent or The Hunger Games. I didn't necessarily hate it but it did leave a few unanswered questions. The only rebellious thing West Grater did was become a Striker. They are hired to kill others alts for money which is illegal. Other than that she didn't try to overthrow the government she just did what she had to to survive and then move on and try to carve out a future for herself. After killing her alt she thinks she is done and can move on, but the Board wants her for a last mission before she can truly be left alone. The only rebellious thing is taking on these illegal jobs and in the second book try to find a way to get away with killing again. At the end of the day, the government is still run the way it is, and there is a twist that is so mind boggling it made me wonder why there wouldn't be a third book. I still found the fact that the government wasn't really overthrown interesting, I just wished the plot development was better because I felt like I could have enjoyed this book more if it was. I found the world building somewhat flat because not a whole lot is described which started me out confused from the first book. Why do they need to do the alt system and why do they need to have strong soldiers. All we have is 2 novels where we are inside her head the whole time which wouldn't have been so bad if there was more explanations and background to why the world of Kerch is run the way it is.
Better than the first book in numerous respects, especially in expanding on the world-building and premise. I had a love-hate relationship with the whiplash pace for conflict and plot twists because it did keep me guessing and really squeezed a lot of story into a book its size.
