Extreme Operational Excellence Applying the US Nuclear Submarine Culture to Your Organization Matt DiGeronimo Bob Koonce 9781478778127 Books

I just finished reading "Extreme Operational Excellence" by Matthew DiGeronimo (Nuclear Submarine Engineer) and Bob Koonce (Commanding Officer of a Nuclear Submarine). This book shares the Nuclear Navy's guiding principles that have allowed our Navy to avoid incidents such as in Japan's three Fukushima Daiichi reactors, the United State's 3 Mile Island incident, and Russia's Chernobyl.

The book talks through applying the following principles and methods to the civilian world:

Knowledge and Learning
Questioning Attitude
Watchteam Backup
Integrity
The Critique/RCA process
Leadership

I had the opportunity to live and work with these principles during my time as a "Nuke" on-board the USS Nimitz. The culture in Reactor Department did indeed practice these tenets which lead to what I now call (as a civilian in manufacturing) "World-class Manufacturing". The way I view this, is in terms of the US Navy being a manufacturer of national defense. There are a few other principles not covered in this book that the US Navy practices such as Ownership, Formality, Understanding, Teamwork, and Anticipation, but these other principles may be rolled up into the other principles to suit the leader of the organization.

There involves some interpretation in transferring these extremely important principles to the civilian world. This book provides an excellent framework for making that transition and take advantage of the decades of US Nuclear Navy experience that has perfected this "excellence".

While other organizations may tout similar principles that may have achieved similar results, even the best organizations could benefit from a review of these principles. After all, no one can argue with the results that the US Nuclear Navy has in fact achieved operational excellence.

Highly recommended!

Extreme Operational Excellence Applying the US Nuclear Submarine Culture to Your Organization Matt DiGeronimo Bob Koonce 9781478778127 Books Reviews

This book offers an insightful view on how a team comprised predominantly of young men operate a billion plus-dollar vessel in dangerous conditions where a seemingly minor error could result in catastrophe and loss of lives. Hence there is a need for "Extreme Operational Excellence". The authors, both retired Naval Officers provide an overview of the culture and practices that are utilized aboard ship and how these can be applied in the private sector. These principles can absolutely be applied to the operations of any industry or department. Furthermore, the principles are applicable to those in management and non-managerial roles.
I found Extreme Operational Excellence to be an insightful view of what has allowed the US Nuclear Submarine forces to operate at the highest levels of excellence. By combining key operational concepts with real world applications from their careers, the authors bring the lessons home. This book would be helpful to any operations manager, but for those in the energy industry it may be particularly helpful. As an executive in the energy industry, I have frequently worked with and for, former nuclear submariners. This book allowed me to better understand their thought processes, and I have already applied some of the lessons learned in my professional life. Many thanks to the authors for their service to our country and for writing this book.
This book is a great tool for your operational and leadership toolbox. It certainly gives you perspective into the reasons why the US nuclear fleet is as professional and successful as it is is. More importantly though, the lessons are easily transferable to any organization. The root cause analysis process which calls for digging deeper into why situations occurred - without blame or shaming - allows for a more fully developed opportunity to learn and do things better the next time. I've worked with Ensign Jones - in theory - and would encourage him to read this as well. At some point, we were all in his shoes and this books can help inward looking professionals to be honest with themselves and their organizations. Well done!
Wow, what a pleasure it was to read this amazing book!

I can't tell what excited me more, re-immersing myself in the culture of a Nuclear Submarine, or the fact that the ingrained lessons learned and experience have been so pertinent to my career. I have been a leader in several different environments in Corporate America, using this book as a lens to assess, in all cases those environments with a high correlation to the principles stated here won, those without struggled mightily.

Thanks to the authors for taking the time to so humbly draft the winning culture of the nuclear submarine community, and drawing the parallels to the business world so adeptly.
I would recommend this book to any up and coming leader as well as the established leader. Much of this book was a great refresher for me as I served on 3 submarines and have faith in the philosophy espoused by the authors. I also found a better explanation of what I already thought I knew as I read along. And, this book gave me more solid information, examples, as well as intuitive methods to become better at my job than I learned in the first 4 classes of my MBA program! Some of the ideas here will be difficult to accept by more than a few managers, supervisors, and business leaders. But, they do work; they are a “tough love” method with sound reasoning and explanations to support the conclusions. Just get the book. You will not be disappointed. That it uses a nuclear submarine as the backdrop in no way diminishes the applicability in any business environment. After you read it, keep it on your desk. You will want to reference it more than a few times!
