Ms. Long, I'm a writer, taking a break between books. I've been running through series after series, looking for a good one to "cleanse my palette" between books. But I haven't run into one I really love, until yours. I've read two of yours so far, and here are a few things I love about them. The sexual tension is fantastic, and you have just the right amount of sex. I personally appreciate it when the sex is a highlight to the story and not the whole story. So thank you for that. Your characters are highly intelligent. I'm so tired of idiot heroes and heroines. But what I love most is that your endings aren't perfect. Real life choices, with actual consequences, have to be made. Your characters don't get it all, but they learn about what is important and make that choice. The two I've read so far seem to have a Cinderella type quality, where the heroine is poor and the hero actually has to give up some of his position in society when he chooses her. This gives your stories some grit that I enjoy. The sacrifice the men make for the women they love, makes them all the more heroes to me. All of this is in addition to your excellent descriptive writing and deep characterization. Thank you for writing such high quality stories.

The hero in this story is Miles Redmond, a very serious and studious man whose scholarly interests are insects. He went on an expedition to Lacao where he made many discoveries which he wrote about and often lectures about. His dream is to go on a second expedition back to Lacao. He initially sees Cynthia Brightly and she takes his breath away, but before introductions are done, she confides in a friend that he is not worthy to pursue. He's a second son, not an heir, and she notices he is bespectacled and dour. He overhears her comments and leaves without meeting her. Then later, she shows up with his sister Violet for a summer party in the country at the family home. The Redmond parents leave for a family emergency and they put Miles in charge of the house and the summer party.

Cynthia Brightly, the heroine, does not have parents or any family. She had friends sponsor her for a successful season in London and she soon became engaged to the Earl of Courtland's wealthy heir. Cynthia is a flirt and is often gossiped about. Her finance got into a duel because of her flirtations and was almost killed. His family ended the engagement and the rest of London's ton dropped her. Mile's sister, Violet invited her out to the country in the nick of time. She had almost no money left and if she didn't find a husband, she was destined as a companion to an old, crotchety woman.

Since Cynthia has no money or other connections, she relies on her beauty and wits and is after a man with wealth. Miles is now the heir to wealth and his father wants him to marry a long time family friend to secure the family alliances. His future father-in-law is willing to finance Miles next expedition to Lacoa. Although Miles does not show Cynthia any kindness and is mostly sarcastic to her, both are attracted to each other.

I like Cynthia for the heroine. She is determined to meet a man with wealth but she is not overly picky and always tries to see the good traits of her suitors and treats them kindly and respectfully. The girl Miles is supposed to woe loves him deeply but she is boring and doesn't really understand his passions. Both hero and heroine try to make their matches work, but it becomes harder as they both fall in love with each other.
The Pennyroyal Green series jumps back and forth between an Eversea and a Redmond, Like No Other Lover is a Redmond book and I can see how the love lives will differ between families, which is one very fun aspect of this series. Miles Redmond is a big nerd, albeit a hot one. He loves women and bugs, and would like nothing more than to travel through the jungle collecting specimens. Of course, since his brother disappeared some family responsibilities lie on his shoulders, one of which being marriage. our two main charters have marriage goals, they just aren’t to each other. This story was also the 19th century version of the “once spurned” rope, where the guy is turned down by the girl, only to have them reunite years later. I really loved the way this book highlighted the unfair way women were thrown to the wolves when it came to virtue and rank. Both Cynthia and Miles were absolutely bound by their social obligations and even in the face of heartbreak, they still saw their love as impossible. It’s clear that the Redmond and Eversea families approach love very differently when it come to their children, and the Senior Mr. Redmond puts love squarely in 2nd or third place. Miles and Cynthia have one of those slow-burn, emotionally painful romances that are so fun to read because it makes the HEA so much more satisfying. I am still loving this series!
